Day One: Work Placement At Rich Sauces Catering Food Supplies

Undoubtedly, it was certainly the 6.30am alarm screeching in my ears that provided the clearest indication that day one had DEFINATELY commenced! You may ask yourself… goodness why on earth does her day begin so early…. but don’t panic, let me clarify I have to commute approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes to Rich Sauces. 

As I dragged myself out of bed with my hair standing on end, feelings of anxiety and nervousness began to creep up on me but I had a positive outlook that I would learn so much from this opportunity and for me this definitely outweighed the early mornings.

Luckily, I had my work clothes set out and breakfast decided so I was on my way in no time but again more feelings of anxiety sneaked up on me as I set off for the journey – what happens if my car breaks down? Can I remember how to change a flat tyre? What happens if I lose my way? Thankfully with the decent beats from Cool FM blasting, my singing commenced and worries faded.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by my boss Tim and shown the sauce suppliers central office with a view of my own personal desk in the distance. At this stage, it was a case of going through an induction/paperwork process receiving my computer log in details, key card and potential company phone. It was at this point that I felt of complete importance within the business of catering food supplies – this is what I had heard the working life was all about, but most of all, it felt real now.

With a much needed tea break by this stage, I was taken through the principal operations of a sauce suppliers, health and safety procedures and introduced to numerous staff which when trying to remember names proved quite difficult! As the day went on, the one aspect that became particularly apparent within the business was how happy the staff were at their work and how long many had worked for Rich Sauces making catering food supplies… and I guess this can only be translated into how well the business treats them.

On that note, as lunch time loomed and as Tim began to get tired talking (who could blame him), I was ushered along with other members of staff to the canteen. And my, oh my, what a brilliant canteen! For only a pound, the staff are treated to such an array of food! Although I had brought a packed lunch with me that day, needless to say I wouldn’t be bringing one for the rest of the week!

Having been absolutely stuffed to the gills, I began a tour around the wholesale sauces factory and various departments, taking note of the extreme scale of operations and asking endless questions throughout. In this time, as a phone call came through, Tim allowed me to eves drop in order to gain an understanding of how they approached sales to potential customers.

With the day drawing to a close at Rich Sauces sauce suppliers, I was given an outline of what the week would entail which I found particularly useful in order to prepare myself for what tasks would be looming my way. Overall naturally, I found the day quite overwhelming and surprisingly long, although having said that I wasn’t able to fit in my usual afternoon naps that happen between lectures! But all in all, the day was a perfect insight into a working business.
